49 Stocks For Buffett Fans [view article]
I am a prime example of what can happen if you are away from your computer for 1 weeks time. Out hiking with all of God's beautiful creatures and my shares of FCX had a hurrican run right through them and I am trying to muck out the aftermath. There were others that shared in this pummeling as well. I welcome, even embrace a bull run even if it's a minor bear retracement. Give me half of this weeks loss back and I will be completely happy. Use my experience as a lesson. To keep Buffet's track record in tact.. it appears to be a prudent contrarian, and totally buy into weakness. I would call this incredible weakness in many sectors. I will do this to hedge what losses I have incurred. There is my Buffet plan. Now to act on it. Reply49 Stocks For Buffett Fans [view article]
Jeff -- note that it was Business Week magazine that selected the list of 49 stocks as Buffet-like. We just filtered the list further in terms of S&P and ValueLine opinions as to general appeal. Certainly, Buffet uses criteria and judgement in his selections that a simple 5 attribute screen cannot capture. Our intent was merely to help those who read the Business Week article by letting them know more about the stocks in the list, but not to judge the realism of Business Week's construction of the list. This final 13 is most un-Buffettlike. Let's begin with the obvious fact that Buffett doesn't own them.A core tenet of Buffett investing is "buying what one understands". He has scrupulously avoided tech stocks as being "too hard".
He doesn't like mining because at the end, the commodidty mined is gone and shareholders are left with "the hole".
Buffett likes stocks with a competitive moat, preferably one with "alligators in it".
Finally, businesses should have capable, shareholder friendly boards and management. Their interests should be squarely aligned with those of shareholders.
There are a number of fine companies on your list. Some of which I have owned, I can't see any being strong Buffett candidates. Reply

As for SLB, we had a 2m barrel of oil, short-side surprise on Friday, and now another LOOP threatening hurricane entering the GOM this week. I know Bush gave the okay Wednesday to use the Strategic Oil reserves, but these delivery disruptions at some point, overwhelm our ability to subsidize. Reply49 Stocks For Buffett Fans [view article]
The short answer is that you missed the opportunity at 10:00 am on Friday, to buy under $69. With Ike projected to enter the GOM, FRE/FNM bailout projected to cost the government trillions, inflation looming, a rate cut in response to more banking troubles, even more inflation looming, and hedge fund sell-offs done, we're resuming the commodity bull market on Monday. good questions to ask before you decide to buy. computer screened lists are just the beginning of research -- basically a way to narrow the field of needed manual research Reply49 Stocks For Buffett Fans [view article]
where is FCX going from here? wow what a punishment for those who bought it at its high. I am looking at it every single day and ,since I don t own it, have been tempted to buy it. At which point can we start to buy it?Is their dividend safe? Are the price of copper and gold going much lower
near term? How about long term? What the history of their dividend? Reply

Bought ACN at an average price of $33 and I can t complain. I am keeping an eye on PAYX and have been tempted to buy it a few times but the direction of the market on this one intrigues me.Anybody knows what s going on with PAYX? I would appreciate any feedback on this one. ReplyTop 10 Outsourcing Stocks [view article]
Author needs to understand the model of offshoring companies, SWITCH companies don't operate in a bodyshopping mode. Cognizant is no different than any of the other SWITCH companies that derive significant revenues from BFS, further Cognizant's BFS practice is growing the best in the industry. A better analysis is required before publishing such articles (Read Ashish Thadani's report published in Seeking alpha a month back on Cognizant, it has quiet a different view) ReplyTop 10 Outsourcing Stocks [view article]
Honestly, the analysis on most of the companies is flawed. With INFY she says they need to get out of body shopping mode. Does she even understand the model of the offshore companies especially when she is talking about the top-5 of the firms. Then she says Cognizant has a focus on Pharma sector and talks about marketRx (one year old story). I agree with the comment by Vivs on the financial services business. Next about Satyam and their philanthropy. Have we started looking at that to decide the quality & performance of a corporation? This looks like a mish-mash of hearsay anecdotes from friends/relatives who work in these firms. Reply

I agree with the comment on TCS; also same is true for Cognizant; the very few acquisitions Cognizant made are also very very small though niche and strategic; and they are yet to really reflect on any results - I can say this as I have been following them for over 10 years now. Also in the given context Cognizant BFS is doing better than rest of Cognizant; and compared to competition BFS. Please go back to the reseatch board m'am.I share the positive outlook on Paychex though :-) Reply

The analysis on TCS is clearly mis -informed. TCS has and continues to grow organically and not through acquisitions. IT has made some small acquisitions in Australia and Chile but to say it has grown through acquisitions is clearly wrong and shows that the writers knowledge of Indian IT firms is shallow, to say the least. Research before u write, Ms Mitra! ReplyInfosys: Moving Up the Consulting Food Chain [view article]
INFY is going to be in the doldrums as it tries to diversify out of the US. Europe - where Axon is based - too is now experiencing a slowdown. The stock is highly priced even after the july earnings disappointment and is now in a downtrend. This stock should move back to the 30s and stay there for the next year. Reply
Indian Offshorers: Summary of Recent NASSCOM Analyst Briefing [view article]
It is good to note a rather positive picture on the state of the Indian IT services industry. My personal view is that while all the facts stated in Ashish's note are correct, we need to collectively recognize the harsh reality that the hey days of high double digit revenue and profit growth for the Indian IT industry are behind us. One big change that will hit the Indian IT employee population this year is a significant slow down in their percentage salary increases. If companies are not going to make fat margins of the past, it is going to show in the employee paychecks. The US recession is serving as an accelarator to this process of salary increase slowdown.
