Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.

Wednesday, October 15.Bullish Calls:Continental Resources (CLR) -- "This is a remarkable decline. All of the high quality ones are down so much, I can't go against it. This is where you pull the trigger.
3M (MMM) -- The moment this stock starts yielding 5%, I'm a buyer. Until then, keep your powder dry.Bearish Calls:Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."Email continues...
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend. - Stocks & Sectors -SampleSeeking Alpha - Stocks & SectorsInternet

Last Thursday Was the Bottom - It's Time to Get Back in
This thread is all over the place.. bottom in, no bottom in sight. to your wacked out. ..So we had a bear bounce. I think we can all agree at least a bounce. I say bear.
We have not been retested yet. We really never hit the bottom we needed to consider a floor. The shorters went away for awhile to set up the next sell off. I feel it could run another 800 and then collide with some giant Kodiac. Tight stops will be the call of the day. When it happens again, I am gonna grab a Guinness from DEO not CEDC collect my nice dividend all the while keeping cash at the ready on the sidelines. I can wait for that next 20% northbound. But I do like BAC down here along with AUY.
Four Commonsense Clues to a Genuine Market Bottom
Did you see the Star Trek with Spock dying? He went through genesis. He came back but he came back a changed Vulcan! You, I, or anybody else cannot predict what the next moves the markets will act on. We have all seen it.. at the drop of a hat lemmings bail out ,shorters act quickly with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel and bam.. everything goes to *#^@. Unfortunately, the vast majority, if not all of us have felt that cut.
I agree that those companies which can cling to whatever lifeblood remains until the dust clears will be stronger but they will be different than they were before this cluster%^$# happened. They will have metamorphisized into a much more efficiently run company.
This is my take on what we're going to witness.. after the all indices bubbles burst, I also believe it will be a process not an event. If you have the moxie.. dig in and hold your ground. If not, get out. One last thought, even if you miss the true bottom, stocks are so damn cheap right now that at100 points off, you will still prosper.

Natural Gas: Mood Swings Subject to Weather
Chi town just had their first snow.. winter is here folks.. My bet is CHK at 23 is due for a ramp up. It could be any of these nat gas plays, maybe XTO another personal fav. Then get a distinguished transporter like APL or KMP and you have the pin action plays likes of ACI, BTU MEE, coming to offset the use of Natty gas. Then comes JoyG/ BUCY.. then the major carriers rails.. then on and on and on..Eventually it gets to China, those folks are going to eventually get cold.. or colder.

Good News for Long-Term Potash Investors
As an author, your predictions are very basic. Very commonplace. The disclaimer: as always, I am sure there are bears out there that will cast doubt on your thoughts. The market as a whole will most likely flourish in two years. I am sure you have done some research but this time you stated what I already knew. That said, I am not a stock guru but I have some education in the markets and that same premonition. Can you add something to this that would convince me and probably others to your predictions? Maybe..like charts... thanks
You Are Not as Dumb as the Bear Market Makes You Feel
we have all been hit by this.. if you haven't good but beat on somebody who has... what the hells the matter with you? I appreciate the man's pain as I am in it as well. most of us are and have been stumped by this market. I lament Steven's opinion. You have not contributed anything positive.
Is It Finally Time to Buy?
While this market is in a bear faux-rally, you gotta roll with it. I am now playing it in 2 day encrementss. Have to .. way too volatile, one day up the next down except the last three sessions. I will play next week on the premise that the banks are going to continue a temporarily slow down on hemmorhaging. Get me through to weeks end and we will ake it from there.
The funky thing, every one of my 12 stocks are all premier yielders.. all over 6%.. I do not have to bail.. bought them cheaper than dirt and if their yield goes up, I can sit them out. So I am thinking I really do not have the worries that some big blue chippers may have.
How Will We Know When the Markets Hit Bottom?
Must Settle - Cramer's Stop Trading! (10/20/08)
He takes people at face value and maybe he trusts too much.. I have seen it as most of you have. Hey haters, look in the mirror. Does that sound familiar? I am willing to bet you trusted him at one time or another and he failed you.. or you thought. Why you hate so much could be linked to a loss of $$, an investment in a stock that did not grow to fruition that he may have suggested. So you hate.
Or is it his intelligence? He is a smart guy. Gotta give him that. As a matter of fact.. many of you here are real smart guys..folks. I can see that by the writing skills and the content or body of your commentary. Kudos to all of you who post. I do appreciate your conviction with your animosity towards Cramer.
Here is my take on it. This hating has to be with somebody.. why not he? One of many who has made mistakes in this forsaken economy. Why is it others have also been quoted or have been seen on TV, radio.., well ok, media of all types and they do not get the poleaxing Cramer does? Is it the bells and whistles he provides as entertainment?
Rich, what is it about Cramer that makes people nuts? he can't be the only guy quoting stock and what to do, loses money and then owns his mistakes. he taught me and millions of others to do homework ,lots of homework and then make a decision based on that. I do and feel more confidant about what moves I make. IS THAT WRONG???
He is obsessive when he talks about homework.. his books preach homework.. he consistently talks homework on his show, so what the hell is the problem?
I guess I need help understanding. He too is human as any of us and has made mistakes. He owns his. I own mine. I'm responsible for me. That said, I hold myself accountable. Why would anybody not do their homework before buying and does anybody ever hold themselves accountable for the choices they make.
What happens if the market tanks and that went conversely with his ranting? What about the Financials and the CEOs and the Gov't and the rest of wall street hedgers? Do they ever become culpable for their hand in this with any of you? How do we put so much focus on one man?
